"Caledonia" Singer Backs Independence First Campaign
March 30th 2007
The impetus behind Independence First's second Referendum Rally has jumped a stage higher with the news that singer-songwriter Dougie Maclean is backing the campaign and will perform his hit single Caledonia' at at the event outside the Scottish Parliament.
MacLean, who is travelling from the Isle of Lewis specially to be at the event commented: "To have a referendum on independence, presented with clarity and
simplicity, would be the best way to let the people of Scotland speak. It is indeed our democratic right."
"I have long been a believer in independence for Scotland and support the Independence 1st campaign, agreeing with all eleven points spelt out in their
charter."
He added "It would be wonderful for Scottish self confidence for independence to
be achieved in our lifetime, but it must be the will of a good majority of the
Scottish people, so a referendum must come first."
Joe Middleton, Press Officer of Independence First said: "This election, no matter
what the result is, won't show conclusively the huge demand for independence which
exists across the whole spectrum of Scottish society. People vote for political
parties in elections for various reasons. The only way to be sure whether Scots
want normal national powers or not is to ask the question directly."
He added "Dougie MacLean's message of support has given us a tremendous boost. I
think it proves the point that Independence First simple democratic demand for a
referendum is wide enough to include everyone who supports independence even if
they have no interest whatsoever in traditional politics."
Independence First are marching through the centre of Edinburgh this Saturday
(31/03) and their demonstration is expected to be the largest ever for an
independent Scotland. Demonstrators will assemble at East Market Street at 12.30 and march to the Scottish Parliament where as well as Mr MacLean they will be entertained by Dick Gaughan, Edinburgh Reggae Band Project Bona Fide, top Scots rock band Mouse Eat Mouse and East Lothian singer songwriter Karine Polwart amongst others.
